Devil's Racetrack
New to the Safari in 2025, the Devil's Racetrack Trail is located approximately 40 miles west of Green River, UT. Coupled with the 51 mile drive from Moab, participants on this trail will be well advised to fill up the tank in Green River if they have range anxiety over their vehicle. The trail itself is 34 miles long containing some of most scenic views in Eagle Canyon and Coal Wash Wilderness areas. The second half of the trail runs along the vertical edge of a towering canyon giving participants unparalleled views of the wash below. The route enters just north of I-70 and includes the Eva Conover Road, South Coal Wash, North Coal Wash, the iconic Devil's Racetrack section, and exits adjacent to I-70 at the Sinbad Pictographs near the Dutchman Arch area. This exit area is very near the Temple Mountain exit 131, approximately 30 miles west of Green River. This trail departs from the Maverik Gas Station on the west end of Green River at 8:00am. Please plan your trip from your lodging location to be at the gathering point for departure at 8:00am.
Scenery
The trail explores the area adjacent to the Eagle Canyon and Coal Wash Wilderness areas of the San Rafael Swell. It offers a mix of spectacular canyon views from the high mesas and sandy wash bottoms. The trail contains almost 3,000 feet of elevation change over the 34 miles. Entering the trail at 6911ft it drops to 5771ft at the intersection of North Coal Wash and then climbs up through the Devil's Racetrack and the fun and challenging Razorback section to a peak elevation of 7163ft. From there it’s downhill to the exit near the pictographs at 7044ft. The area contains a few arches to keep on the lookout for and several named features, The Blocks, Golden Gate, Chimney Rock, Joe and His Dog along with several others.
Surface
The trail is mostly hard packed dirt, sandy canyon wash bottoms, a few tight turns and is highlighted by the rocky ledges and steps of the Razorback section. With 70 total miles of interstate travel required for this trail your vehicle must be able to travel 65 to 70 miles per hour.
